Fish gotta swim, birds gotta … walk on water?

I took this photo on Sunday.

The seagull is standing on the Rideau Canal. Yes, that’s right … standing on water, as you can see for yourself.

I think it’s some kind of status thing. All the other birds can fly; so where’s the glory in that?! But a bird that can walk on water — now that‘s a rare talent!

I bet female seagulls really go for him.

I see the photographic evidence – but its hard to believe! I’m taking your word there was no thin layer of ice formed as yet, although your recent weather would probably have allowed that to occur if the canal were not flowing fast enough.

So what other explanation can there be? Those suckers weigh too much, in my view, for their flat feel to provide that much flotation. Could it be the density of the canal water in that partiuclar location is substantially higher than normal, etc., etc.?

Great photo, stephen, and even greater quanda;ry. Well done!

Looks like a thin film of water over sand – the water is too flat and without ripples to indicate any depth. Even a thin film of water can reflect the color of the sky – such as wet sand near the ocean reflecting the colors of the sunset.

Driving by the canal every morning to work this month I see this a lot. The grey spots are the big clue here.

Ok, thats either a thin layer of ice or this bird knows what plexiglass is.
