Canada’s national pastime

Canada has two national pastimes; three if you count lacrosse. The winner, hands down, is our preoccupation with the weather. Number two is hockey — of course!

I don’t usually post on this sort of thing, but the regular season ends on Sunday. I am watching two very close races unfold.

First, my favourite NHL team, the Montreal Canadiens:

playoff race

Montreal is in eighth place — the final playoff position.

From sixth to ninth, there are four teams within three points of one another. Each of them has two games remaining. Even the tenth place team is still in the hunt, since they have three games remaining.

Montreal has eight wins and two losses in their previous ten games. That’s my team — hot at the end of the season, just when they need to be!

Second, my fantasy hockey team, the Blackberries:

I am in fourth place, but only five points out of third. Can I make it into the top half of the league?

Oooooooh, the suspense. Bet you can hardly stand not knowing.

Hockey is GREAT fun! We can’t afford L.A. Kings games, but we like to head down to Long Beach to watch the minor league (or whatever they’re called in hockey) Ice Dogs once in a blue moon. I don’t know what I like more: the game, the fights, or when they take an audience member seated on a saucer and shoot them across the ice with a rubber band at the giant inflatable bowling pins on the other side. That was quite a sentence…

“Minor league” sounds right to me. We have the Senators NHL team here, but I think I’ve only attended one game. It’s a lot cheaper to see the 67s Junior “A” team, and the rink is within walking distance of our house. Great fan support — lots of fun!

I bought Paint Shop Pro a couple of weeks ago, and it has a “screen capture” feature that lets me create jpg images from anything on the computer screen. When I travel to Peterborough maybe we can fix you up with the software and I’ll show you how to use it.

I am not a sports fan, but I am a Canada fan. I love Canada. I’m American and I always think Canadians are much better people than we are.
