Virginia Tech

Many Virginia Tech students are replacing their Facebook profile photos with the above symbol of mourning and solidarity.

The Washington Post warns that Web sites soliciting donations may be the work of scam artists. Anyone seeking to donate funds to assist victims of the shooting and their families should give to established charities, such as the local branch of the United Way:

Director of Community Resources Stephanie J. Graham said that she anticipates a good portion of the funds going toward more immediate needs of those affected, such as crisis intervention and counseling. Longer term, the United Way chapter hopes to provide support for funerals and short-term housing for displaced students.

“A lot of students don’t have health insurance and a lot of families don’t have life insurance to cover things like funeral costs.”

Right before I came here, I had logged into Facebook and saw the rash of profiles with the VT symbol. I think it’s a good show of support.

    What a tragedy.
