"Hundred Billion Chances And Ways to Have Avoided Today"

Messages from the Virginia Gunman. Heart-wrenching to hear a bit more of the perspective of the person doing the killing. Also heart-wrenching to hear his comparison of himself to Jesus Christ… to think that this type of mental process would have been going on, that he thought of himself as the epitome of victims, suggests that there should have been some help for this boy. Surely, the signs must have been present, with this type of mental process going on.

Yes, there were signs. A couple of his teachers called attention to his antisocial behaviour, and I think it’s safe to say that the university administration under-reacted.

Hindsight is 20/20, of course. But these shoot-em-up scenarios have happened enough times now, schools have to be proactive. I think the email update has it right:

I predict that wrongful death litigation will be filed against the University before the start of summer by parents of those killed Monday.

Whether the litigation will succeed, I don’t presume to know. But it looks like the university should have done more than they did.
