Tolerating torture

It seems that the majority of people in the country don’t really have a problem with what you describe, as long as they think it’s keeping them “safe”. … The Constitution has been shredded, our laws are now circumvented, and the people did nothing. America does not care.

One of Andrew Sullivan’s readers laments his fellow Americans’ tolerance of torture.

Meanwhile, presidential candidate Barak Obama makes this his issue:

Torture is how you create enemies, not how you defeat them. Torture is how you get bad information, not good intelligence. …

It’s time to tell the world that America rejects torture without exception or equivocation. It’s time to stop telling the American people one thing in public while doing something else in the shadows. No more secret authorization of methods like simulated drowning. When I am president America will once again be the country that stands up to these deplorable tactics.

Obama seems the sanest candidate in the race. Unfortunately, sanity doesn’t seem to win elections in the U.S. 😥

Makes me want to vote for him, that’s for sure. Too bad Snaars is absolutely correct. He doesn’t even stand much chance of winning the race for leadership of his party, let alone the presidency, does he?

Obama certainly impresses me. By all accounts, Hillary is running a very polished campain. But I worry that she’ll be pretty hawkish in her foreign policy, if she is ultimately elected. I’d definitely rather see Obama in there, extending an olive branch internationally.

We shall see. For the Democrats, it’s between Hillary Clinton, Obama, and John Edwards. So far, there has been little movement of support in any direction. So there’s still hope that he may develop momentum. He is doing extremely well on the fundraising front.
